What happens when magic is illegal, but survival depends on it?
In this episode, I’m joined by Melinda Kucsera to talk about Curse Breaker: Enchanted, a fantasy story where the world does not just provide a backdrop. It presses on the characters from all sides.
The protagonist, Sarn, lives in a society where magic is outlawed and punishable by death. That is already awkward enough, but his magic also has a rather inconvenient giveaway: his eyes glow green when he uses it. Hiding who he is becomes a daily survival strategy, especially in a world where the wrong person noticing can be fatal.
Melinda also takes us into the underground city where Sarn lives, a vertical settlement carved out by a vanished race and adapted by those who now occupy it. Sarn is indentured to the rangers, whose job is to keep people alive in the Enchanted Forest. That forest is not just scenery. It has rules of its own: start no fires, carry no weapons, do no harm. Break those rules and the forest may respond.
One of the strongest parts of the conversation is how practical the worldbuilding becomes. If you cannot light a fire in the forest, how do you cook or keep warm? If magic is illegal but useful, who reports it and who quietly looks the other way? If your magic forces you to keep promises, what happens when obedience hurts the people you love?
We also discuss Sarn’s hidden son, the secrecy around that relationship, and the cost of protecting a child in a society where indenture, law, and magic all close in around him. The result is a world where rules are not decorative. They shape behaviour, restrict choices, and create pressure.
This is very much a Rubicon episode about consequences: anti-magic laws, a quasi-sentient forest, dangerous promises, and the compromises people make when survival depends on secrecy.
Listen to or watch the episode and explore how Melinda Kucsera builds a fantasy world where the rules bite back.
